Pilates And Yoga

Pilates

Pilates is a gentle, relaxing exercise technique. It is suitable for all due to no impact; the Pilates regime will lengthen and strengthen your body. Originally called ‘Contrology’ by its creator Joseph Pilates (1880 – 1967) Pilates is based on eight principles: - Alignment, Breathing, Centring, Concentration, Co-ordination, Flowing movements, Relaxation, Stamina. Pilates had asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever as a child. He devised the exercises in order to overcome illness and frailty.

He did this by studying all forms of exercise, including yoga, gymnastics, martial arts, dance and ballet. He also studied animals and their movements, noting that animals stretch.

By concentrating on posture, then creating a strong and flexible central core to work from the body becomes energised and balanced. Pilates utilises the small stabilising muscles to benefit the whole body, allowing the big muscles to do their job of moving the body.

Yoga
Freestyle Fitness Yoga developed and created by Jayne Nicholls over 10 years is a fitness programme that incorporates deep stretch and yoga postures. All aspects of FFY are validated from a fitness perspective. Anyone taking part in a FFY class can expect to improve their flexibility greatly in 8 weeks.

Freestyle Fitness Yoga is different from traditional yoga as it is not a spiritual experience; it mimics Yoga in its breathing and style offering postures that endorse strength and stability. There is no dogma, chanting or philosophy attached to this workout.

There is no Sanskrit terms as postures are prescribed from the body’s natural anatomical perspective. We do not use yoga names and references. Extreme postures that exceed optimal ranges of motion are generally avoided. FFY exercises that target and positively enhance the body’s postural muscles are included in this workout.
